I Want One!

[WINERY] VERGEwine adds, "We're inspired by the wines of Cote Rotie, which is why we look to mountain fruit, older vines (relatively speaking), and cooler sites."

[WINERY] VERGEwine links, "Google Maps View of the Grist Vineyard - Just to the left (west) of the marker. On the far western edge of Dry Creek Valley."

gcdyersb talks a bit about styles.

[WINERY] VERGEwine adds, "Just wanted to throw out a couple options - Lamb good. Short Ribs good. Avoid any mustard based sauces."

[WINERY] makingVERGE tells gcdyersb, "TA is 6.51 g/L and no we didn't add any tartaric acid to this wine. Went out like it came in... no additions."

gcdyersb is curious about the TA and tartaric.

[WINERY] VERGEwine comments, "The 07 actually has quite a bit of acidity, which was one of the first things we found in the Grist Vineyard Syrahs."

mxracer98 would like to know, "So is it ready to drink now? Would it benefit to decanting? "

[WINERY] VERGEwine says, "I think what we're trying to accomplish is to not make washed out, overly extracted, palate busting wines. The 07's alc is 14.8%, which is high, but it's really well integrated into the wine."

[WINERY] VERGEwine shares the release notes on Syrah.

Sit down! The movie’s about to start!

I just love Doris Day!

Doreen, the movie’s about to start and I notice you haven’t mentioned much about the Verge Dry Creek Valley Syrah 2-Pack I picked up. Well of course I’m glad you like it, but did you happen to think of anything in particular with reference to tonight?

Hmm? Well, no, it’s not a particularly special night; I mean, any night with you is special, Doreen, but no, there’s no anniversary or anything. Well it is an intensely aromatic wine bursting with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and spice. But that’s not really relevant to tonight. Certainly, the light notes of clove, cinnamon and vanilla are playful among the darker fruit tones, but I feel like you’re over thinking here.

No, well, yes, 2007 produced a longer growing season for Dry Creek Valley resulting in more developed and fully-flavored fruit, but the connection I’m making isn’t quite that deep. Pull back just a little.

Think about it: we’re watching The Man Who Knew Too Much and drinking Syrah. Eh? Eh?

Oh come on! This is the movie in which the song “Que Sera, Sera” debuted! It was a thoughtful bit of word play! Sera, Syrah? I can’t believe you missed it. Yeesh, you kept going on about palates and legs and noses like I’m supposed to know how any of that relates to this movie.

Fine. I’ll watch it alone.

Verge Wine Cellars

Founded:
2006
Owners:
Mike Brunson & Jay Kell
Location:
Healdsburg, CA

Founded in 2006 by Mike Brunson & Jay Kell, VERGE Wine Cellars is dedicated to producing expressive Syrah from organic and biodynamic vineyards along the edges of the wild; unique plots they have deemed Fringe Vineyards. Their intention is to let Syrah shine by spotlighting fringe farmers who are leading the charge in organics, grow amazing Syrah and respect the wild ecosystems around them.

Winemaker, Mike Brunson has nearly twenty years of experience crafting California Syrah and is a leader in advocating organic viticulture in Sonoma County. Most recently, he led the charge to convert the 100-acre Michel-Schlumberger ranch to an organically farmed wine estate.

VERGE takes a minimalist approach in the cellar. Native yeasts contribute to what they have termed the Wild Stamp: a Fringe Vineyard’s ecological footprint present in the wine itself. The reds are only racked once prior to bottling, and filtering/fining are dependent on the vintage, but generally used only when absolutely necessary. The barrel regime is approximately 14-18 months of aging in a combination of new and used French Oak. The primary goal is to produce age-worthy Syrah that is expressive of site and evangelizes the greatness of California Syrah.
